First cake – “All-Occasion Downy Yellow Butter Cake”

My lovely daughter has been in the kitchen all day today making her very first cake with fondant frosting.  She experimented a few days ago making a cake but it didn’t turn out so well so I introduced her to Rose Levy Beranbaum’s, “The Cake Bible”.  Rose knows cakes!   I’ve made many of the cakes in her book and love them all!  Here’s a sampling of one of her recipes.  All-Occasion Downy Yellow Butter Cake  Try it you’ll love it!

So, after Virginia made the cake she just had to make fondant.  We’ve looked in books and on the web and finally found a homemade fondant recipe that actually had ingredients we could get in town here.

Here’s the fondant recipe we decided to try.  It is fabulous!  We are novices to this field and it worked for us so it must be easy. We didn’t have any plastic wrap on hand so she used bread bags to store it in the fridge.

After putting the fondant on she wanted to do something more with it and decided to pipe on it.  Well, we haven’t any piping tools so she took freezer paper and formed it into a tube.  All this was unbeknownst to me.  She just came in and showed me her finished product.  I was so impressed with her improvisation.   She is so excited she can’t wait to make her next cake!

We’re going to have to get this girl some tools.
